The BHS Vertical Reciprocating Conveyor (VRC) is a hydraulic lift designed to move heavy materials and equipment from one elevation to another, between floors or mezzanines. Each VRC is custom-built to fit into the customer’s space, with weight capacities and carriage sizes to match any requirement. They’re ideal for moving automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and picking robots between levels, and for connecting the vertical nodes in conveyor lines. These capabilities ultimately support the transition to automation, but a VRC also offers a more cost-effective way to move materials than traditional elevators.
Unlike a freight elevator, VRCs are built for things, not people, whether that’s a loaded pallet or a forklift. That means they don’t have the same maintenance or regulatory burdens as an elevator. The BHS VRC’s simple push-button controls and quick lift intervals improve facility throughput while keeping the focus on safety, Daley said.
“In our design processes, safety and productivity go hand in hand,” he said. “That’s why we incorporate so many layers of mechanical fail-safes in the VRC.”
While component failure isn’t likely, BHS engineers wanted to protect users from even the rarest of accidents, Daley said. That’s why they build redundant safety protections into every VRC. A shut-off sensor prevents the carriage from moving with an open gate. Velocity fuses and drop locks keep the carriage suspended in the unlikely event of hydraulic hose rupture. And steel, powder-coated construction ensures every VRC holds its integrity for a lifetime of heavy use.
